It is one of the most successful electronic tracks in music history. It sold over 2.8 million copies worldwide, topped the charts in more than 35 countries, and became the biggest European hit of 1993. Even today, its famous synthesizer hook is recognized instantly by billions of people.
It was a massive motivational message for the youth of the early '90s. After years of political and economic changes globally, this song told people that there are no boundaries anymore ("no valley too deep, no mountain too high"). It is about pure confidence, pride, and doing what you want with no fear.
The iconic, high-pitched hook was created using a vintage synthesizer (specifically, the Roland Juno-106). The producers wanted a sound that would cut through a noisy club like a knife, and that simple, repetitive melody became the ultimate formula for global success.
British radio stations at the time hated rap in dance music. To conquer the UK market, the producers completely removed Ray's rap verses from the UK single version, leaving only Anita's chorus and the instrumental. Ironically, this "rap-free" version still went straight to Number 1 in the UK for five weeks!
